Homer, the Poet Who Shaped Western Literature
Nearly three thousand years ago, an ancient Greek poet named Homer composed two of the most influential works in world literature: The Iliad and The Odyssey. Although almost everything about Homer remains uncertain, most historians believe he lived sometime during the eighth century BCE.
Many scholars even question whether Homer was a single person. Today, researchers generally believe that both epics were the result of a long oral storytelling tradition before they were finally written down. For generations, poets memorized and performed these stories, passing them from one generation to the next. Regardless of who Homer really was, his poems became the foundation of Western literature and continue to influence writers, filmmakers, philosophers, psychologists, and historians today.
The Iliad
The Iliad takes place during the final weeks of the Trojan War. Surprisingly, it is not the complete story of the war. Instead, it focuses on the anger of the Greek warrior Achilles after a conflict with his commander, Agamemnon.
Although the battles are spectacular, the real conflict is often psychological rather than military.
The Odyssey
The Odyssey follows the Greek hero Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. His journey lasts ten years and is filled with monsters, storms, gods, magical creatures and impossible decisions.
For this reason, many modern readers see him as a more relatable hero.
The Gods in Homer
One of Homer's greatest innovations was the way he portrayed the Greek gods. Unlike many earlier religions, Homer's gods behave almost exactly like human beings. They:
argue · become jealous · fall in love · make mistakes · help their favourite heroes · sometimes deceive each other
The gods constantly interfere in human affairs, influencing wars and personal decisions. However, there is an important difference between the two epics.
In The Iliad, people often appear powerless because the gods control much of what happens. In The Odyssey, however, Zeus explains that human beings are often responsible for their own choices. The gods may give advice, but people must accept the consequences of their actions.
Why Is Homer Still Important?
More than 2,700 years later, Homer continues to influence modern culture. His stories have inspired Shakespeare, James Joyce, Margaret Atwood, Christopher Nolan, and countless films, novels and television series.
